Protected Speech: Comparative International Law Research Project
Strengthening & expanding the scope of whistleblower protection laws
Posted May 13, 2022
Work & Deliverables
We are hoping to compare international law and country laws that protect human rights defenders and journalists who report in the public interest and compare those with similar laws that protect whistleblowers. Together with the assigning attorney, the volunteer lawyer will focus on select international or country laws for comparison and produce a research memo comparing or distinguishing the protections that apply to the different "speakers" (human rights activists v. journalists v. whistleblowers).
Preparation Phase
- Intro call with supervising attorney
Collaboration Phase
- Read background documents provided by supervising attorney
- Research country/int'l laws determined as priorities for comparison
- Draft outline of research memo for review/consultation with supervising attorney
- Draft/finalize research memo
Wrap Up
- Forward memo to supervising attorney and transfer collected research files/sources
Government Accountability Project
Government Accountability Project is the nation’s leading whistleblower protection and advocacy organization, having assisted over 8,000 whistleblowers since its founding in 1977. We help whistleblowers hold government and corporate institutions accountable by presenting their verified concerns to public officials, advocacy groups, and journalists, and seeking justice when they suffer reprisal. Government Accountability Project has drafted, spearheaded the campaigns to pass, or helped defend all the federal whistleblower protection laws that exist today. We have unique expertise, earned over 40 years, in minimizing the risk and maximizing the effectiveness of whistleblowing.
