The Democracy Capacity Project

Local Democracy Task Force

Support organizations working on voting rights/civil rights at state and local level

Posted March 14, 2022

Background & Context

The grassroots nonprofit organizations involved in this project are doing work critical to preserving our democracy and fighting for our civil rights at the state and local levels.

As part of their action plan they may use tools such as voter registration drives, or policy advocacy in the state and local legislatures and executive branches of government that are regulated by the state.

Their work may include:

- Voting rights and fair access to the polls
- Criminal justice reform
- Reproductive justice
- Environmental issues
- LGBTQ+
- Healthcare issues
- Education issues
- Other civil rights

Work & Deliverables

Note being "accepted" into this project means that we've accepted your indication of interest in our work, and we will reach back out as new opportunities come up. You will have another chance to say yes or no to a potential assignment, and we won't just assume you're available whenever we reach out next!

We plan to offer a variety of pro bono opportunities available for Task Force members relating to nonprofit advocacy organizations working at the state and local level. Each kind of opportunity will have different training requirements.

Our first opportunity is doing an Advocacy Assessment for a nonprofit organization doing advocacy work in the states using the Bolder Advocacy Practical Guidance - What Nonprofits Need to Know About Lobbying series. If you sign up for the Task Force you'll get more information on required trainings for that opportunity - and additional free (non-mandatory) trainings you can attend if you are interested.

We will also have additional upcoming opportunities for the Task Force. Next up will be some research tasks related to the rules applicable to nonprofit interaction with voters (voter registration drives etc). Watch out for more news about those options soon.
