Election Protection 101: What Volunteer Lawyers Need to Know (Virtual Training)

Wednesday, October 7th at 3pm ET / 12pm PT | Virtual (Zoom)

Posted September 29, 2026

Background & Context

Join We The Action and Voter Protection Advocate Network (VPAN) for a one-hour virtual training on the fundamentals of election protection work. You’ll learn what volunteer lawyers should know about protecting the right to vote and how to get involved in election protection and election observation efforts ahead of the midterm elections. No prior training or experience in voter protection work is required to participate. Note: This training does not replace training that may be required for specific projects.

At We The Action, we believe that lawyers have the power to protect and strengthen our democracy. That’s why, this election cycle, we’re partnering with the VPAN to train lawyers on the fundamentals of voter protection.

VPAN is a free, nationwide online training program offered by the Deliver My Vote Education Fund (DMVEF), a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) organization. This workshop will teach volunteer lawyers how to help ensure that voters have the tools, information, and confidence they need to exercise their right to vote.

As millions of voters prepare to cast their ballots across the country, protecting the right to vote remains critically important. In every election cycle, eligible voters encounter obstacles, including confusion about changing ID requirements, polling place issues, long lines, language and accessibility barriers, and misinformation.

Lawyers are uniquely positioned to help protect the right to vote and ensure that voters have access to accurate, accessible information. By volunteering, lawyers can help voters navigate challenges and make sure they have the support they need to participate in our elections.

Immediate Problem

Lawyers play a vital role in supporting the administration of free and fair elections and ensuring that every voter can cast their ballot free from intimidation. They can use their legal knowledge and skills to monitor polling places, staff legal hotlines, advise election officials facing harassment, help enfranchise returning citizens, and ensure that every eligible voter can cast a ballot that counts.

Threats of investigations, executive orders, disinformation campaigns, and strategic legal maneuvering can sow confusion and erode confidence in election processes. Lawyers are needed to provide nonpartisan, pro bono support to protect the right to vote and strengthen our democracy before, during, and after this year’s critical midterm elections.

To prepare you to take action as a voter protection volunteer lawyer, this training will provide:

- An overview of key principles and guidelines for lawyers engaging in voter protection work.

- An overview of volunteer opportunities and what election observation work looks like in practice.

- Practical guidance on communicating with voters to help address potential hurdles, such as noncompliant IDs or inactive voter registrations, before they become obstacles to voting.

- Tips for documenting and escalating incidents of voter intimidation or voter suppression, including how and when to report concerns.
Information about VPAN’s additional resources and training modules to help you continue building your voter protection knowledge and skills.
