Texas Legal Poll Monitor
Serve as eyes and ears on the ground to help ensure safe and secure elections throughout Texas
Posted September 25, 2026
Background & Context
Election Protection is a nonpartisan coalition dedicated to ensuring that all eligible voters in Texas have the opportunity to cast their ballots without obstacles. We do this by stationing poll monitors across the state and by helping operate the 866-OUR-VOTE voter assistance hotline.
Our Legal Monitoring program is a collaboration between TCRP and our Texas Election Protection Coalition partners at the ACLU of Texas, Asian Americans for Texas, the Asian-American Legal Defense Fund, the Asian Law Caucus, the Barbara Jordan Leadership Institute, the Coalition of Texans with Disabilities, Common Cause Texas, Disability Rights Texas, the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the League of Women Voters of Texas, and the NAACP's Legal Defense Fund.
Immediate Problem
Legal monitors serve as our eyes and ears on the ground to help protect voting rights and ensure fair and equal access to the ballot across Texas. Their legal training and skills allow them to play a unique role in our Election Protection program.
Our program is statewide. In addition to volunteers in major urban counties (such as Bexar, Collin, Dallas, El Paso, Harris, and Tarrant Counties), we particularly need lawyers and law students who live in or are able to travel to Val Verde, Waller, Williamson, Cameron, Denton, Fort Bend, Hidalgo, Galveston, or Lubbock Counties, as well as a several other suburban, exurban, and border counties.
CLE credit is available for completing training for this program
Work & Deliverables
The responsibilities of a legal monitor include:
-- Answering questions from voters
-- Reporting problems occurring at the polls
-- Collecting vital data that is used to advocate for better elections in the future
- Ensuring that poll sites are in compliance with both the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Texas Election Code
Texas Civil Rights Project
The Texas Civil Rights Project is boldly serving the movement for equality and justice in and out of the courts. We use our tools of litigation and legal advocacy to protect and advance the civil rights of everyone in Texas and we partner with communities across the state to serve the rising movement for social justice. We undertake our work with a vision of a Texas in which all communities can thrive with dignity, justice, and without fear. Our Voting Rights Program tackles the systemic issues that suppress democratic participation in Texas — from voter registration to the moment when an individual casts their ballot. Through litigation and advocacy, TCRP fights to turn the tide on the state’s abysmal voting rights record by removing barriers to voter registration, supporting grassroots voter mobilization efforts, and opposing new attempts to suppress voting. As a critical element of that work, we help lead the Texas Election Protection Coalition: dozens of grassroots organizations that work year round to ensure that all eligible voters in Texas can cast a ballot that counts. Our efforts include operating a toll free hotline to answer voters’ questions, training and deploying hundreds of legal and grassroots volunteers who work at polling locations during Early Vote and on Election Day, using digital tools to connect with voters, and keeping legal counsel on hand to fight for voting rights in court.
