Know Your Rights Camp: Autopsy Initiative

Advise mother on legal options after her son's death in L.A. county jail

Probe inconsistencies in official reports to seek justice for victim and family

Posted July 15, 2022

Immediate Problem

Client's son died in custody of a Los Angeles County jail. Client has identified discrepancies in the first autopsy report and inconsistencies between reports of different county authorities. She does not believe that the official cause of death is accurate and wishes to explore legal options to address discrepancies and determine how her son died.

Work & Deliverables

Client would like to consult with a volunteer attorney to determine what legal recourse is available to her. This consultation will entail reviewing the case information, conducting legal research as needed, and advising the client on options to challenge/probe inconsistencies in official reports.

The volunteer attorney would have the option of representing the client in pursuing recourse but does not need to commit to that representation at this time.

A lawyer local to Los Angeles is preferred, and familiarity with California civil rights and criminal law is required.
