Case Manager - Obtaining vital documents needed to obtain IDs

IDs help clients obtain housing, jobs, vote and restart their lives.

Posted April 4, 2021

Background & Context

Without a state ID, people can't get a job, access social services and sometimes can't even be served at a food bank. When food and a roof is someone's priority, voting takes a back seat. Some of our clients have lost all forms of ID and get caught in the circular red tape of needing one kind of ID to obtain another form.

We help folks navigate the process, pay for all the documents and get them an appointment with the DMV to obtain their ID and register to vote.

Immediate Problem

We are an all-volunteer chapter of Spread The Vote and are in dire need of more people take on the large number of client referrals we receive every week. Many of our clients have job offers or housing that cannot be accepted until they have an ID, so we try to get them going as quickly as possible.

Work & Deliverables

Case managers act as the one point of contact for clients from intake to obtaining an ID. We have volunteers to assist with navigating the process, but need people who can oversee the case and do research on what is needed to move it along the path to an ID.

We are looking for long-term volunteers (at least 6 months) and generally need 3 hours per week. There is online training, then hands-on training starting with client intake and moving onto case management.

Nearly 21 million U.S. citizens and legal residents lack valid state IDs. We help people in need of this vital passkey to access housing, healthcare, jobs, bank accounts and more. We assist clients in obtaining and pay fees to acquire birth certificates, proofs of legal residence, marriage certificates, Social Security card and a myriad of other documents needed to get an ID. Our clients are often elderly, poor, homeless, handicapped or returning citizens, but we serve anyone who contacts us or is referred by our partners, such as homeless and treatment centers, churches, sheriffs offices, local agencies, and various community service non-profits. As part of the process of ordering an ID we make sure to register clients to vote and provide information on when, how and where to vote--some for the very first time.
