Michigan Election Protection Attorney

Help ensure all eligible voters can vote

Posted September 29, 2026

Background & Context

As our eyes and ears on the ground, nonpartisan Election Protection Attorneys are stationed at polling places across Michigan to monitor the election process to ensure that everything proceeds smoothly and to act if needed by our legal team.

Immediate Problem

We will deploy volunteers throughout Michigan, and we are especially looking for volunteers in major cities with a history of voter disenfranchisement and/or issues around voting.

Work & Deliverables

Sign up here for an in-person shift as an Election Protection (EP) Attorney during early voting site or on Election Day!

Promote the Vote Fund and the ACLU Fund of MI are training attorneys to serve as challengers* and be on a call for collecting affidavits. Our pro-voter challengers use challengers’ special rights and responsibilities to help ensure that all eligible voters can vote by monitoring early voting sites and polling places, engaging directly with election workers, and reporting issues to our legal rapid response team. EP Attorneys will be provided with draft affidavits and be on a call to collect affidavits from voters or other pro-voter volunteers.

Before your shift, you must complete our virtual, on-demand training. The training will be available starting in October. After you complete the training, we will send you your challenger credential and official shift assignment via email.

*Challengers must be registered to vote in Michigan and receive a credential from PTVF. Challengers have the right to challenge the actions of poll workers if the challenger believes that an election worker is not following the law. PTVF trains all volunteers who are registered to vote in MI as challengers. Poll monitors don’t need to be registered to vote in Michigan, but they don’t have the right to challenge poll worker actions.
