Michigan Nonpartisan Challenger & Poll Monitor

Help ensure all eligible voters can vote

Posted April 27, 2026

Background & Context

As our eyes and ears on the ground, nonpartisan challengers and poll monitors are stationed at polling places, early voting sites, and absentee counting boards across Michigan to monitor the election process to ensure that everything proceeds smoothly and no voters are wrongfully disenfranchised. Our legal team trains and deploys challengers to communities with a history of voter disenfranchisement and/or issues around voting, so you’ll be working on the ground where Michigan voters need you most.

Immediate Problem

We will deploy volunteers throughout Michigan, and we are especially looking for volunteers in major cities with a history of voter disenfranchisement and/or issues around voting.

Work & Deliverables

We are looking for challengers and poll monitors to serve for the August 4 Primary Election (including at select sites during the July 25 - August 2 early voting window) and for the November 3 General Election (and at select sites during the October 24 - November 1 early voting window).

Challengers must be registered to vote in Michigan and receive a credential from Promote the Vote Fund (PTVF). Challengers have the right to challenge the actions of poll workers if the challenger believes that an election worker is not following the law. PTVF trains all volunteers who are registered to vote in MI as challengers.

Poll monitors don’t need to be registered to vote in Michigan, but they don’t have the right to challenge poll worker actions and are restricted to observing from the public viewing area. Poll monitors must be able to be present at Michigan polling locations, even if they are not registered to vote in Michigan.
