Florida State Legislative Research Project
Help us protect the civil rights of survivors of sexual assault in Florida
Posted January 21, 2025
Background & Context
Rise is a national nonprofit organization that helps teach everyday people how to pass their first law. This project directly relates to our Team America portfolio which aims to pass the rights contained in the Sexual Assault Survivors Bill of Rights in all 50 states. To date, we have passed over 60 laws in 44 states and 2 federal laws protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors in the US. Currently we have a strong team of organizers working in the state of Florida but we want to make sure our legislative landscape is fully up to date.
Immediate Problem
We need your help comparing our model bill language with the rights that already exist for survivors in the state of Florida. We would like to understand what rights included in our language exist in full, what rights might partially exist and what rights do not exist at all yet. We would also like some help coming up with draft bill language pertaining to a survivor's right to be notified of their rights.
Work & Deliverables
We need someone who is licensed in the state of Florida to research the rights that are already codified into law for survivors of sexual assault and compare them to the rights contained in our model bill draft to determine what rights we advocate for still need to be passed into law.
Preparation Phase
- Intro call with volunteer coordinator
Collaboration Phase
- Complete preliminary research
Wrap Up
- Deliver final project and possibly schedule an end of project call with volunteer coordinator
Rise Up, Inc
Rise, a national nonprofit, was founded by Amanda Nguyen, a sexual assault survivor, in November 2014 to pen her own civil rights into existence along with the 25 million rape survivors in the United States. Rise started by passing the federal Sexual Assault Survivors' Bill of Rights unanimously through Congress and later signed into law by President Obama. Rise’s immediate goal is to scale up a social movement to pass their Sexual Assault Survivors' Bill of Rights - in all 50 states. Rise trains volunteers to pen their own rights into existence, giving them the tools and resources necessary to engage with state legislators with the ultimate goal of passing a bill in their home state.
