Lawyers Defending American Democracy Meeting the Moment Initiative
Raise awareness of issues threatening the rule of law.
Posted September 16, 2026
Background & Context
Meeting the Moment was launched by Lawyers Defending American Democracy in response to growing challenges to our democratic institutions, the Constitution, and the rule of law. Recognizing that lawyers have a unique professional responsibility to defend these core principles, the initiative seeks to engage lawyers across the country in helping their communities understand what is at stake, why these issues matter to everyone, and how they can respond constructively.
Work & Deliverables
Lawyers are encouraged to use their legal knowledge, credibility, and community connections to help the public understand what is at stake for our democratic institutions, the Constitution, and the rule of law. Volunteers speak to community groups, businesses, bar associations, schools, faith communities, and civic organizations; write opinion pieces; engage on social media; and participate in educational programs designed to inform and engage the public. LDAD provides the messaging, training, toolkits, and other resources volunteers need to carry out this work.
Lawyers Defending American Democracy
Lawyers Defending American Democracy (LDAD) is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) organization composed of attorneys, law professors, former judges, and former government officials dedicated to preserving the rule of law, constitutional democracy, and the independence of the legal profession. We believe that lawyers have a special obligation to speak up when democracy’s fundamental principles are threatened. Our oath, our training, and our professional responsibilities call on us to lead by example and help safeguard the values that underpin our constitutional democracy. Our work includes filing amicus briefs, authoring Calls to Action, presenting public education programs, and encouraging lawyers and the public to speak out against threats to the rule of law and our democratic institutions. LDAD's nationwide Meeting the Moment initiative mobilizes lawyers across the country to engage with their communities in defense of constitutional democracy.
