Election disinformation has become one of the most urgent threats to voter access and public trust in the election process. False claims about voter fraud, voting machines, mail ballots, noncitizen voting, and polling place issues can spread quickly online, confusing voters and undermining confidence before accurate information has time to reach the public. This work is especially important because the online information environment has become faster, more fragmented, and harder to moderate.

Voter Protection Corps needs to build a proactive monitoring and response program for the 2026 election cycle so misleading or harmful narratives can be identified early, documented carefully, and addressed through trusted channels. Attorney volunteers will help review flagged content, support platform removal requests, and provide legal standby during high-risk election windows, strengthening VPC’s ability to respond quickly and credibly when disinformation threatens voters.

Volunteer attorneys will support Voter Protection Corps’ 2026 Election Disinformation Monitoring program by helping identify, assess, and respond to election-related mis- and disinformation online. Volunteers will participate in a Train the Trainers program using Junkipedia, a platform designed to track online disinformation, and will be trained alongside other volunteers through customized counter-disinformation webinars with partner organizations, including Common Cause.

After training, volunteers may help monitor public social media content, review flagged examples of potential election disinformation, assess whether content may have legal or civic impact, and support the preparation of platform removal requests consistent with platform community guidelines. Attorney volunteers will play a distinct role by lending legal credibility to formal removal requests and serving as on-call legal standby during key monitoring periods, especially around primary elections and Election Day.

The program is fully remote and will run from September 15th through Election Day on November 4, 2026. The expected time commitment is 2–4 hours per week during active monitoring periods, with multiple shift options on Election Day. No prior election law experience is required; VPC will provide training, resources, and legal-specific orientation on platform reporting and removal request protocols.
