Attorneys Needed for Virginia Post-Election Canvass Monitoring

Monitor and advocate canvass meetings to protect the rights of voters

Posted November 5, 2025

Background & Context

On Tuesday, November 4, 2025, voters across Virginia cast their ballots in the 2025 general election. Tens of thousands of these voters cast provisional ballots that will be adjudicated by Virginia’s 133 local electoral boards in the week following the election.

Immediate Problem

To ensure that the rights of voters that voted provisional ballots and/or used same-day registration are respected, Virginia Election Protection needs volunteer canvass monitors to attend the meetings at which these ballots will be adjudicated and advocate on voters' behalves.

Work & Deliverables

Confirm the date, time, and location of the jurisdiction’s electoral board meeting, canvass, and provisional ballot hearing by contacting the jurisdiction.

Attend and take detailed notes during the jurisdiction’s electoral board meeting, canvass, and provisional ballot hearing.

As needed, serve as a designated representative for voters who voted provisional ballots and help them assert their rights during the provisional adjudication.

Virginia Civic Engagement Table

VCET was founded in 2008 and has been quietly doing the work behind the scenes helping our partners get stronger, talk to more voters year-round, and work together to make the systemic changes Virginia needs. We’re proud to be doing the work to support and build Virginia’s progressive community. We envision a multi-racial democracy in Virginia where the full diversity of the commonwealth is actively participating, representing, and transforming our democracy. Where white supremacy is being actively dismantled, people of color, working families, and impacted communities are thriving in a just economy and leading healthy lives. We work towards our vision by cultivating diverse progressive leadership, driving collaboration through equitable and inclusive relationships, moving collective action in the progressive movement, and growing shared capacity and resources for the progressive movement infrastructure.
