Legal Research to Help Protect the Vote In Virginia
Virginia’s 2025 elections are an important test of our democracy infrastructure
Posted April 25, 2025
Background & Context
Facing threats like voter suppression, disinformation, and systemic election administration hurdles, VPC takes a proactive, year-round approach. Its 2025 priorities include supporting state and local coalitions to address emerging threats to democracy. Through voter education, capacity building, and direct advocacy, VPC works to ensure free and fair elections.
Immediate Problem
A key focus for Voter Protection Corps in 2025 is to develop threat assessments for Virginia and other states with important upcoming elections, then work with partners to address these threats.
Work & Deliverables
In coordination with voter protection experts from the Voter Protection Corps, volunteer lawyers will draft a legal memo assessing threats Virginia voters may face to registering, voting, and having their votes count in 2025. The memo will also explore voter protection strategies for overcoming these threats.
Preparation Phase
- Kickoff meeting with Voter Protection Corps
Collaboration Phase
- Legal research and memo drafting
- Midpoint conversation with feedback on early draft
Wrap Up
- Incorporate feedback and finalize draft
