Virtual Lawyer Training: Preparing Nonprofits For Attacks

January 30, 2025 at 3pm ET / 12pm PT | Virtual (Zoom)

Posted January 7, 2025

Background & Context

Nonprofits play a vital role in society by addressing needs that are often unmet by the private sector and government. But recently, they have come under attack.
Our nonprofit partners have expressed concerns about the increasing risk of attacks by government actors intended to interfere with their work. At We The Action, our mission is to amplify the impact of nonprofit leaders. So we are calling on you, our community of lawyers, to help support our nonprofit partners.
Because we expect these risks to increase in 2025, we've invited Bolder Advocacy to train lawyers on how to help nonprofit partners understand these attacks, assess and reduce their risks, and prepare to respond if an attack does occur. Lawyers will be essential in assisting nonprofits with organizational compliance to mitigate and defend against any attempted targeting.
Bolder Advocacy has provided trainings to thousands of nonprofit organizations and lawyers. They work with nonprofit boards, staff, and volunteers to improve their understanding of the legal issues involved in influencing public policy advocacy so they can maximize their advocacy and election-related activities. This workshop will inform volunteer lawyers on how they can help nonprofits with operational housekeeping to ensure their organizational security.

Immediate Problem

Nonprofits (and their staff) are often scrutinized as they engage in successful advocacy and civic engagement efforts, such as voter registration and legislative campaigns. After this workshop, you will have a clear understanding of how to advise nonprofits of how to prepare for allegations of non-compliance so that their organization can continue to advocate with confidence in 2025 and beyond.

To best equip you to assist nonprofits, you will also receive:

- An overview on the advocacy rules that apply to 501(c)(3) public charities;

- Information on how to utilize Bolder Advocacy’s “Advocacy Check-up – Nonprofit Compliance Self-Assessment” to help nonprofits identify record-keeping and reporting strengths and weaknesses;

- Tips to help lawyers address compliance gaps in a nonprofit’s operations, including sample policies and timesheets;

- Best practices for nonprofits to respond to false narratives;

And more!

Work & Deliverables

Get trained in this virtual session led by Bolder Advocacy on how to provide guidance to nonprofits that may be targeted. Nonprofits are critical in providing services to vulnerable communities and advancing just causes. Come learn the ways in which nonprofits may be threatened, where the needs are, and what you can do to help these organizations as a volunteer lawyer.
