Be a Virginia Election Protection Legal Advocate

Monitor the voting process & help prevent voter disenfranchisement and intimidation.

Posted September 14, 2024

Background & Context

As Virginia's largest nonpartisan voter protection effort, Virginia Election Protection is on the front lines of guarding Virginians against voter suppression. In a volatile election year, it's up to us to advocate on behalf of voters, fight suppression, and ensure all laws are being followed.

Work & Deliverables

As the eyes and ears of Virginia's largest nonpartisan voter protection effort, nonpartisan Legal Advocates and Voter Advocates are stationed at voting locations across Virginia during early voting and on election day to assist voters and report problems. Volunteers do not need to be registered to vote in Virginia.

All volunteers are required to complete a virtual training. After completing the training, volunteers can choose a voting location and time that works best for them. We strategically support volunteer opportunities at voting locations with histories of issues, such as voter suppression.

Virginia Civic Engagement Table

VCET was founded in 2008 and has been quietly doing the work behind the scenes helping our partners get stronger, talk to more voters year-round, and work together to make the systemic changes Virginia needs. We’re proud to be doing the work to support and build Virginia’s progressive community. We envision a multi-racial democracy in Virginia where the full diversity of the commonwealth is actively participating, representing, and transforming our democracy. Where white supremacy is being actively dismantled, people of color, working families, and impacted communities are thriving in a just economy and leading healthy lives. We work towards our vision by cultivating diverse progressive leadership, driving collaboration through equitable and inclusive relationships, moving collective action in the progressive movement, and growing shared capacity and resources for the progressive movement infrastructure.
