Be a Nonpartisan Election Protection Challenger in Michigan

Challengers monitor the voting process & help prevent voter disenfranchisement and intimidation.

Posted September 3, 2024

Background & Context

Our pro-voter challengers make sure eligible voters can cast their ballots, free from interference and voter intimidation. In the past, PTV’s challengers have corrected improper election procedures at early voting sites and made sure polling places were accessible to voters of all mobilities.

Work & Deliverables

As our eyes and ears on the ground, nonpartisan challengers are stationed at polling places, early voting sites, and absentee counting boards across Michigan to monitor the election process.

Challengers must be registered to vote in Michigan and receive a credential from PTV. Challengers have the right to challenge the actions of poll workers if the challenger believes that the poll worker is not following the law.

All challengers must complete PTV’s on-demand training on Michigan election law. After completing the training, volunteers will be given their credential and assigned to an early voting site or polling place near where they live. PTV strategically assigns challengers to locations with a history of disenfranchisement and voter suppression.

Promote the Vote

Promote the Vote (PTV) is a coalition of nonpartisan organizations committed to removing barriers to voting and safeguarding Michigan’s elections. As the primary coordinator of Michigan’s nonpartisan Election Protection Program, PTV works with Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights to staff and monitor the 866-OUR-VOTE hotline and organizes election protection volunteers across the state. For the November 5 General Election, PTV is looking for lawyers to serve as monitors during early voting, on Election Day, and during the post election canvass.
