Help Civil Rights Advocates Track Voting Rights Bills in Key States
This project will allow us to provide support to state-based voting rights advocates.
Posted March 8, 2023
In order to best support our voting rights partners on the ground, we are looking for volunteers to help monitor voting rights legislation in 11 key states throughout the 2024 state legislative session. We are primarily in need of summaries on key legislation and code section information so we can understand the impact of these bills.
Since 2021, we have seen a significant number of restrictive voting laws passed in various states. Lawyers will monitor legislative sessions and support our tracking efforts. They may also flag bills that are not wholly focused on voting rights but contain code sections that have the potential to be harmful. Volunteers will also analyze these provisions and briefly describe the likely impact.
This would be an ongoing project. Volunteers would be expected to monitor and provide summaries on bills on a regular basis and provide immediate support when necessary.
Background & Context
We monitor legislative sessions in eleven states and want to identify potential code sections for anti-voting bills to reduce harmful bills passing in states. As part of a broader coalition of civil rights and voting rights organizations, we are hoping to equip activists on the ground with the information they need to defend democracy.
Immediate Problem
We want to be able to adequately review all potential voting legislation in key states to prevent harmful voter suppression bills from passing and notify the grassroot advocates on the ground to monitor and support them with digital campaigns to stop bad bills or remove potential language that is added at another time during the session.
Preparation Phase
- Orientation with the volunteer coordinator
- Develop familiarity with bill tracking resources
Collaboration Phase
- Monitor legislation and collect relevant information
