Florida Cares Charity Corp.
Collaborative Board
Advocate for prisoners in Florida on health, safety, welfare, and release matters.
Posted June 30, 2022
Background & Context
An example of some of our needs include, we have a prisoner who has stage 4 cancer and is missing his chemo appointments for no reason, or an incarcerated person who lost their visits with their mother for live because mom gave him a watch during visitation or any number of visitors who lost their visits for life because while they were inside at visitation search dogs detected a scent from their vehicle which ended up to be 1 flake of marijuana which was destroyed in testing.
Immediate Problem
We think a written letter from an attorney explaining how the vehicle search form saying nothing is being held against a visitor if they refuse a search yet FDC is denying visitors future visits if they deny a search, would be helpful in stopping this practice.
Work & Deliverables
Schedule legal calls with incarcerated individuals who are otherwise unable to communicate their issues with our advocates. This primarily consists of speaking with people in confinement who have had a recent run in with officials regarding a variety of topics from abuse to rule violations.
Preparation Phase
- Intro call with the Executive Director to go over the current issue in need of help
Collaboration Phase
- Complete research, schedule phone consult with incarcerated
Wrap Up
- deliver legal brief on issue
Florida Cares Charity Corp.
Florida Cares Charity is a non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of the incarcerated in the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC). We strive to do this through programs, education, visitation, advocacy, charity and legislation. We assist people who are incarcerated and their loved ones with issues that they are unable to resolve with FDC after filing requests and grievances including medical, disciplinary and other issues that arise. Finally, we advocate for legislative changes to retroactively reduce harsh prison sentences and improve prison conditions. Florida Cares is a free, registration based organization in which directly impacted and formerly incarcerated people register.
