Advise on Possible Merger of Historical Preservation Nonprofits

To move forward creating a community museum and event venue that can educate and entertain the people in the area and beyond of the unique history of the area.

Posted August 3, 2020

Background & Context

We need to know advantages/disadvantages of combining all assets under one non-profit or to continue to function as two. The building that is currently serving as a museum is owned by one group and run/staffed/financed by another. Insurance agent raised the question of separate ownership to limit future liability. Unsure how to proceed. Plans were being made to change ownership/land deed and now we need help/advice.

Immediate Problem

GHA had planned to take over ownership because current chair of the other non-profit felt that group could not perform the purpose set forth by the donating past owner to create and maintain a museum and scholarship fund.

Work & Deliverables

Advice to officers/board on best way to proceed with question of ownership and type of relationship that could be set; long term lease?

Guinea Heritage Association

Located in the southeastern corner of Gloucester County, VA., our main purpose has always been the celebration and preservation of the history of this unique water community that is Guinea. As time change, we know that more jobs are being lost, more old stories and traditions are harder to document. We are working to obtain pictorial, oral and written histories of the people, the working water community and of the boats built and worked in the area, buildings, churches and stores. The fall Guinea Jubilee is the signature event; held each September with art contests (student & adult), music, food, displays and parade. We are now working to preserve an old store as a country store museum and small event venue. We have made progress and now have a place to store many of the growing collections. We have had success holding both educational events featuring local historians and musical entertainment. History: http://www.guineaheritage.org/history/
