Declarations for Migrants Detained at Otay Mesa Detention Center

We are preparing declarations for clients detained at Otay Mesa Detention Center for potential use in filing Habeas petitions for their release.

Posted April 24, 2020

Background & Context

Otay Mesa Detention Center is the facility with the highest number of confirmed COVID 19 cases in the country. Al Otro Lado is hoping to file Habeas petitions for the immediate release of these migrants to protect their health and potentially save their lives. We need help preparing declarations as our staff has limited capacity to respond to the high need.

Work & Deliverables

Volunteers will call the Otay Mesa Detention Center and prepare a legal declaration with a migrant detained at the facility. We will provide a template declaration for volunteers to use as they draft their declaration. Al Otro Lado supervising attorneys will review draft declarations and may request volunteers to conduct a follow-up interview by phone with the client to obtain additional information as needed.
