Remote Opportunity: Represent Individuals Arrested in the August 7th Mississippi ICE Raid
Hundreds of folks need pro bono representation in their immigration cases as they fight in removal proceedings.
Posted October 29, 2019
ICE raided chicken processing factories in areas surrounding Jackson, Mississippi on August 7, 2019 during the largest single-state immigration raid in US history. Roughly half of the 680 people arrested remain in detention and nearly all need attorneys to fight with them to stay in this country with their families.
Once matched with a client, a volunteer attorney will need to conduct client interviews and review intake files to determine an individual's defense(s) to removal. Attorneys will appear telephonically for a client's Master Calendar Hearing and work remotely on a client's removal defense. Representation will culminate in an Individual Merits Hearing where the attorney will present the client's case in person to an Immigration Judge in Memphis, New Orleans, or a court housed at a detention center in central Louisiana.
We provide access to translation services for volunteer attorneys to communicate with clients. Additionally, the Mississippi Center for Justice offers substantive and procedural support to volunteer attorneys new to Immigration Law.
