Immigration Detention Project

Immigration detention has significantly increased under the current administration, with the majority of individuals detained having no criminal convictions. Texas has more individuals in immigration detention than any other state. The Immigration Detention Project, a new project housed at the A&M University School of Law Legal Clinic, seeks to alleviate this issue by helping individuals seek release from immigration detention in Texas through habeas petitions in federal court. Upon receiving a request for assistance, IDP reviews the individual’s case for habeas eligibility, and then places that reviewed case with a pro bono attorney. IDP provides access to a habeas training, templates, and continued guidance to its pro bono attorneys. This pro bono opportunity would be a great way to gain federal court experience without taking on a time-intensive case. IDP has several cases ready to place with pro bono attorneys, so we are hoping to gain more pro bono attorney volunteers asap!
