Operation Clear Out Dilley

Help secure the release of families and children detained at the Dilley family detention center

Posted March 17, 2026

Background & Context

In collaboration with Texas Civil Rights Project, our pro bono immigration habeas project is launching Operation Clear Out Dilley, an urgent effort to secure the release of the approximately 50 families with children still detained at the Dilley family detention center.

Immediate Problem

Some of our recent habeas cases involving detained families in Dilley have drawn national attention, including cases reported by CNN involving detained children and the Gamez-Cuellar family and mariachi brothers. But dozens of other families remain detained without media attention or legal representation, despite troubling reports about the harsh conditions for children inside the facility. For these families, habeas representation is the only meaningful avenue to challenge their unlawful detention and obtain release.

Work & Deliverables

We are working with counsel on the ground to assemble a full case list soon. In the meantime, we are recruiting pro bono lawyers who can be on standby to take a habeas case quickly as soon as cases are assigned. While you can file a pro hac vice motion in the Western District of Texas, we are in urgent need of pro bono lawyers who are already admitted to practice in the Western District. Immigration expertise is not required.

Upon signing up, you will be sent a volunteer form to complete.

We provide full support, including templates, research, pleadings, strategy guidance, and coordination with experienced habeas litigators.

Thank you for ensuring these families can access the habeas and due process protections designed to prevent unlawful detention. When any family is denied these rights, we are all at risk; defending them upholds the rule of law and embodies the highest purpose of our profession.
