CA Name Change for US Citizen Raised in Mexico

Help US Citizen raised in Mexico with a CA name change to register double nationality

Posted June 11, 2024

Background & Context

Our client born in the United States but raised mainly in Mexico after her parents returned to Mexico with her when she was two years old. Her parents registered her birth in the United States, and then later reregistered her birth in Mexico under a different name.

Our client was then raised in Mexico under the name in her Mexican birth record. This dual registration was a very common practice for Mexican families with US-born children, as, prior to 1997, Mexico did not allow for dual nationality and foreign-born children had difficulty access many necessary services, such as education and healthcare.

Our client, who currently lives in Mexico City, is trying to correct her birth records in Mexico to correctly reflect that she was born in the United States, but wants to continue to be able to use the name she was raised with-- which is also the name on her state-issued & financial documents, and her childrens' birth records.

To correct her Orange County, California birth record to reflect her given name, she needs to publish her name in a newspaper and go through a CA court process to change her name before she can correct the birth record.

Work & Deliverables

We are looking for a CA-barred attorney who can help our client legally change her name so that she can correct her Orange County, CA birth record.
