Increase visibility and impact of access to justice movement

Posted December 29, 2023

Work & Deliverables

We are using the term "legal inclusion" on our new website which is very close to launch. It's never been used in this way before (the only places that came up on a Google search were as a term for law firm DEI initiatives). Here's how we explain it: WHAT IS LEGAL INCLUSION? Our vision is modeled on the concept of financial inclusion, as defined by the World Bank. Legal inclusion is intended to help individuals gain access to useful and affordable products and services that meet their legal needs – all delivered in a responsible and sustainable way. Legal inclusion is the vehicle to deliver access to justice. It is an enabler for UN Sustainable Development Goals 10: Reduced Inequalities and 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. JTA supports technology solutions that seek to advance legal inclusion – technology that reduces disproportionate impact and inequitable distribution of access to justice.

Question: Should we consider trademarking the term?

Justice Technology Association

The access to justice crisis is overwhelming. Some stats: 92% of people with civil legal problems who did not receive any or enough legal assistance in 2022, up from 86% in 2017. In at least 75% of civil cases, at least one party is self represented, meaning they go it alone through a daunting process stacked against them. The US is ranked #115 of 140 countries on affordability of access to legal support. We believe technology can and should be part of the solution. Justice Technology Association is the first and only organization bringing together like-minded tech entrepreneurs in pursuit of equity in the justice system. We support innovative solutions designed to modernize interaction with the legal system, making it more accessible, efficient and fair for everyone. Our work centers around three main goals: 1. Building an ecosystem of justice tech entrepreneurs, investors, top reform advocates, academic innovators, policy experts, tech leaders, and like-minded organizations - all working to increase access to justice through technology. 2. Supporting ethical, mission-focused startups that are creating tech solutions to the access to justice crisis by eliminating roadblocks and raising awareness of this nascent sector. 3. Centering consumer benefit and mitigating consumer harm for those who need affordable legal support. We are 100% volunteer-driven and your support will enable us to scale to further support underrepresented entrepreneurs and narrow the justice gap for the billions of people who cannot currently access their rights. Because the law belongs to all of us, not just those who can afford it.
