Felony Conviction Vacation Calculator - Decision Tree/Legal Logic
Adding felony branch to conviction vacation eligibility calculator to increase reach and impact
Posted April 10, 2023
Background & Context
Our Clearviction Eligibility Calculator only provides information on misdemeanors, excluding felonies (e.g., RCW 9.94A.648 - vacating records of conviction for class B or class C felony).
Immediate Problem
By expanding our services to include felonies, we would also increase our user reach and impact - and hopefully, become a 1-stop shop for all conviction vacating needs in Washington state. We would like your help to build out the decision tree for felony convictions eligible for vacation so that we can help a broader range of people.
Work & Deliverables
Volunteer to provide a list of the RCWs which authorize a judge to vacate a felony conviction or impact that felony vacation in any way.
Volunteer to create a decision tree using apps.diagram.net and this folder as a working space for how to determine whether a felony qualifies for vacating
If time permits, volunteer to translate the decision tree into user flow for the calculator (and if possible, notes for why certain pages were placed at particular points, if there is a significance in doing so).
Preparation Phase
- Schedule a background call with volunteer coordinator
Collaboration Phase
- Meet briefly/as needed to provide initial feedback with volunteer coordinator/product lead
Wrap Up
- Deliver final documentation
Clearviction
Clearviction is an open-source nonprofit working to create an online Eligibility Calculator and guidance to help people with criminal convictions vacate their records to have easier access to housing, education, and government assistance. We currently have a working eligibility calculator for misdemeanor convictions in Washington state. We are hoping to add felony convictions as well as adding other states in the future.
