Fight for Students in Delaware

Posted January 23, 2019

Partners For Justice is an innovative program designed to provide enhanced advocacy for the low-income community. Our non-attorney Advocates, embedded with public defenders, fight against the enmeshed penalties of justice-system involvement: retrieving property and restoring benefits, fighting to retain housing or employment, obtain vital documents, and more.

At our Delaware site, we've encountered a number of students whose education has been disrupted by justice-system involvement. These students are struggling to get back into public school following a period of incarceration, fighting to stay in school despite having been arrested, or just trying to receive appropriate educational opportunities. Our Advocate team is anxious to aid these students, but we need attorney supervision to proceed in many of these meetings and hearings.

We're seeking volunteer attorneys who would be willing to partner with an Advocate to fight for students. The project would involve appearing in a supervisory capacity at a limited number of meetings in Wilmington, Delaware, and supervising the Advocate in their research and activities on behalf of the student. The student would be concurrently represented by a public defender in their criminal matter, and cross-practice collaboration and communication would be encouraged.

If we're successful, we'll keep kids in school who otherwise would have lost their shot at finishing their education--and we're eager for your help in attaining this goal!
