Refugee legal protection for Afghans arriving on the Caribbean Island of Dominica

Afghan refugee are desperate for safe have in a third country while awaiting resettlment

Posted December 20, 2021

Background & Context

We are a group of volunteers working to connect recently arrived Afghan refugees in the US with whatever support we can. Our mission has expanded to include those trying to flee the Taliban to safe havens.

Immediate Problem

We need legal guidance on what would happen to Afghan nationals when they arrive, visa-free, to Dominica and want to claim refugee status. We have tried to connect to a dozen lawyers on Dominica with no success.

Work & Deliverables

As the Taliban tightens its grip on Afghanistan, many nationals who are SIV, P1 and P2 visa pending and approved for resettlement in the US, do not have a route to a third country where those visas can be processed (these US visas cannot be processed in Afghanistan or in several surrounding countries). The Caribbean island of Dominica is one of the few places Afghan nationals can travel to without a visa. We are looking for a lawyer(s) who can guide us on how to get these Afghan nationals, who arrive at Dominica, legal protection as refugees once they touch down on the island. We also have a .pdf of the current status of refugee policy on Dominica which we can share.

Project Plan

  • Zoom meeting with Afghan Refugee Housing Networ

Collaboration Phase
