Legal Advice on Screening Volunteer Medical Interpretation Abilities to Help Refugees on a Free App

Be able to screen volunteers who are skilled enough to appropriate for medical interpretation for refugees and immigrants in medical settings where language barriers are an issue.

Posted February 5, 2021

Background & Context

Tarjimly provides free interpretation and translation to refugees, immigrants, asylum seekers and those who serve them. Refugees and Immigrants often encounter language barriers that can affect the services they receive. One area where the impact is large and the stakes are high is in the medical realm. Some clinics already use our services to provide language access to patients, but many are hesitant as our volunteers are multilinguals and not professionals. We are working with a medical education organization to create a screening to help recruit and screen interpreters with medical knowledge to improve the quality of medical interpretation, and to help spread our service to clinics and medical facilities worldwide.

Immediate Problem

This will help medical facilities provide better quality language access to refugees and immigrants, as well as help refugees receive the medical assistance they need.

Work & Deliverables

We need advice on how to proceed with the assessment in a way that maximizes benefit and limits liability to our non-profit organizations. We want to do the most good with the least legal risk.
