Legal Advocacy Support for Low-Income/Marginalized Fathers

Healing and meaningful change that will have lasting impacts for generations to come.

Posted January 21, 2021

Background & Context

Many of the fathers at Fathers’ Uplift have the passion and motivation to take action towards improving their situation and reconnecting with their children and families. However, they often lack specific expertise regarding legal proceedings that is necessary to allow these changes to take place. Receiving legal counsel that would otherwise be financially inaccessible would allow these fathers an opportunity to navigate the legal system and move forward with their goals which will benefit themselves, their kids, their families, and their communities.

Immediate Problem

The cost of hiring a lawyer is usually too great for a father to pay, especially given the other expenses they are covering. Therefore, the fathers do not have the right professional guidance in how to proceed most effectively through the courts and advocate for themselves with issues like child support, custody, divorce, and other matters relating to their parenting.

Work & Deliverables

Meet with the individuals and provide concrete legal counsel as to how to move forward through their legal case, so that they can be confident in the decisions they make and ensure they have the best chance of fulfilling their goals.

Fathers' Uplift Inc.

Fathers’ UpLift works to assist fathers in overcoming barriers (financial, oppressive, emotional, traumatic and addiction-based barriers) that prevent them from remaining engaged in their children’s lives. We also provide mentoring, cultural outings and counseling to children who are growing up without their fathers. We uplift fathers and strengthen families nationwide through service, love, and encouragement. Fathers’ Uplift aims to: Provides fathers with a safe space to spend time with their children in a stress free setting. Support agencies in developing creative ways to increase male engagement and create a father friendly environment. Address fathers’ concerns about poverty and the importance of their roles in the life of their family through supportive groups, psycho-educational support, and professional development that promote self-advocacy. Engage in research and advocacy that render solutions on ways to engage fathers in the lives of their children. Celebrate fathers and encourage others to do so. Everyone has the potential to be a good parent. Emotional scars and systemic oppression, however, diminishes that potential. And we protect ourselves the best way we know how. Often times, we see fathers, remaining disengaged. Our uplifting duty requires us to pick our fathers up from the pits of despair and assist them in regaining every ounce of confidence they possessed before they encountered these barriers. We are obligated to help fathers overcome. We pride ourselves on being servants.
