Work & Deliverables
I. is a 17-year-old from Honduras I. is of Garifuna ethnicity. I.’s father left her mother when she was pregnant, and I. has never met him. I. was raised solely by her mother. Their financial situation was dire --the Garifuna population is systematically discriminated against in Honduran society. The Safe Passage Project pro bono attorney would help I. apply for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) in Kings County Family Court based on her father’s abandonment, then assist I. with filing Form I-360 Petition for SIJS with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The government has indicated that it plans to initiate removal proceedings against ILQ, but it has not yet done so. The pro bono attorney would also represent I. in Immigration Court once her removal proceedings begin.
