Facilitate large animal evacuations in wildfire-prone Jefferson Co., CO

Rewrite bylaws for JCHC to enable application for federal nonprofit status

Posted July 21, 2022

Background & Context

JCHC is the organization providing trained volunteers for security and care of the equines and large animals rescued during disasters. Jeffco is one of the highest risk wildfire counties in the U.S. and drought looms over us, so the need is urgent. Our volunteers work under the Jeffco Sheriff's Animal Rescue Team, but we must be financially self-supporting.

Immediate Problem

We need to apply for grants and fundraise, and therefore we need nonprofit status. Updating our bylaws is the simple, but crucial first step.

Work & Deliverables

We need to be sure our bylaws will make us 501 (c) 3 ready.

Project Plan

Preparation Phase

  • Intro call to volunteer coordinator
  • Receive and read the proposed new bylaws

Collaboration Phase

  • Provide feedback to JCHC on their bylaws as related to intended 501 (c) 3 application..
  • Go over the modifications and edits with JCHC coordinator.

Wrap Up

  • Re-read the bylaws as edited and give final approval to JCHC coordinator.

Jefferson County Horse Council

JCHC is an all-volunteer organization promoting and protecting all equine (horses, mules, burros, etc.)activities in Jefferson County, Colorado. We seek to educate members and the public on equine health and welfare, and we speak for equine owners and users on matters of trails, habitat, zoning, sports, equine assisted therapy, etc. Most urgently: our members are the volunteers who house equines (and other large animals) during emergencies, such as wildfires and floods. To further this effort we are seeking federal 501 c 3 status.
