Voter Registration in Person Guidance in Swing Left’s Super States
Help our team create voter registration guidelines for grassroots volunteers

Problem statement
One of the key ways to help Democrats flip seats in 2020 is to register voters in Swing Left’s Super States. However, each of our twelve states Super States have different laws governing voter registration. These laws have to do with what people can/can’t do, say, and even wear when registering voters or hosting voter registration drives.
Many volunteers, groups, and partners are already doing voter registration in states locally. They have the ability to figure out what is legal locally and to find and/or give training and guidance.
We do not have the capacity or legal expertise to give guidance to volunteers and groups on how they can actually do in-person voter registration in states. We are currently redoing the voter registration page on Swing Left’s website to make sure it is clear of any legal guidance. The pages will now only have general best practices and tips and tricks that apply to all states nationally.
Super States
Swing Left’s Super States are AZ, TX, CO, IA, WI, MI, OH, PA, NC, GA, FL, and ME.
Desired guidance
Ideally, we would like to give guidance on our website for how to register voters in each of the twelve Super States. These guides would specifically state:
-Who can register voters
-Who can register to vote
-Any steps an individual needs to take to start registering voters
-Rules around how voter registration is conducted
-Requirements for handling and turning in paper voter registration forms
-What individuals can and can’t do when registering voters
-Any rules specific to voter registration drives
Swing Left
Swing Left is a national grassroots organization that took back the House in 2018 by building a national campaign for Democratic candidates in 84 Swing Districts in three big ways: recruiting and training an army of volunteers, raising funds from grassroots donors, and building cultural momentum for the midterms. For 2020, we’ll be bringing our “campaigns-in-waiting” model to swing Senate seats, defend the House, win the state-level races needed to ensure fair maps for 2021 redistricting—and, of course, the Presidency.
