DISSCHOLARED RESEARCH: Helping Save Students' Private Scholarships
Help students' understand private scholarship policies and scholarship award displacement.

Background & Context
DISSCHOLARED™ is an ed-tech program and platform powered by YesSheCanCampaign™ that helps students and families understand universities' and colleges' private scholarship policies and the practice of scholarship award displacement. Scholarship award displacement is one of the root causes contributing to the student loan debt crisis. Need-based recipients cannot use their private scholarship funds to fund their gap after federal, state, and institutional aid, as intended by private scholarship donors, causing many students to borrow more or drop out of college. Our goal is to ensure students and families will be able to make informed college and financial decisions. We are working to dismantle scholarship award displacement nationwide. Five states have outlawed this practice (MD, NJ, PA, WA, and CA). There is currently a federal bipartisan bill called The Helping Students Plan for College Act that addresses scholarship award displacement nationwide. According to a nationally representative survey conducted by Student Beans, at least 50% of U.S. college students who receive private scholarships experience scholarship displacement. This prevents students from making full use of the scholarships they have earned.
Immediate Problem
We currently need help with researching and analyzing. Our database contains four-year accredited universities and colleges. There is a total of 2,832 four-year accredited universities and colleges in the United States of America. Any help would be helpful!
Work & Deliverables
Volunteer Lawyers or law students can select what they would like to do to help our organization. The volunteer options consist of the following:
DISSCHOLARED Researcher - As a researcher, you will help research universities' and colleges' private scholarship policies. As a researcher, you will contribute to our national database that showcases universities' and colleges' private scholarship policies. This database will help students and families understand private scholarship policies and scholarship award displacement.
DISSCHOLARED Research Analyst - As a research analyst, you will help analyze universities' private scholarship policies. The Research Analyst will help create maps, charts, and more to showcase our research.
DISSCHOLARED Legal Writer - As a legal writer, you will help prepare legal memos, blogs, or policy papers explaining scholarship award displacement. (Lawyers Only)
Preparation Phase
- Attend YesSheCanCampaign and DISSCHOLARED Virtual Volunteer Training
- Sign volunteer agreement and return to volunteer supervisor
- Volunteers select their position and assignment
Collaboration Phase
- Prepare volunteer assignment
Wrap Up
- Submit volunteer assignment
- Fill out closing volunteer assignment form
